Current Job Title: Head of Parts
Location: Motus Commercials - West Midlands Region
When Joe joined Motus Commercials: 2017
Apprenticeship: Level 2 in Vehicle Parts / Level 3 Team Leading
Other roles whilst at Motus Commercials: Parts Van Driver, Parts Advisor, Parts Team Leader, Parts Sales Centre Manager
Joe's apprenticeship experience: When I was first asked to go onto an apprenticeship back in 2018, I was very apprehensive. Firstly, because I was already working the role which the apprenticeship had been made for, so I honestly thought, "Why should I have to do extra training and spend time away from home and family?" Secondly, at the age of 29, I felt as though I was far too old to be enrolled in an apprenticeship, as in my mind this type of training was for 16 – 24-year-olds.
I am very happy to say that my opinion changed dramatically. My apprenticeship helped me gain important knowledge and has aided in my progression within Motus Commercials. Along the way, I also met some incredible people and made lifelong connections too.
On top of this, my passion and drive to succeed for myself and the Motus increased tenfold and gave me the confidence I never knew I had.
Following this, I was promoted to Parts Team Leader and enrolled in the Team Leading L3 apprenticeship which I am due to complete at the end of Q1 2023.
This has certainly been a challenge, as 2022 was a tough year with various challenges throughout the business, which meant I was having to balance a busy work schedule with setting aside enough time to focus on my learning objectives.
There were indeed times when I thought about pulling out of the course, but I like to constantly remind myself, that embracing challenges and coming out the other end, will make you stronger, aid your development, and will pay dividends in the future. As I like to say, “Short-term pain, long-term gain!”
I am glad I stuck with the course, as over the last 12 months, I have gained valuable tools and knowledge, which I have applied in my everyday role. This has assisted with my progression into my new position as Head of Parts for the West Midlands Region.
Joe's future with Motus Commercials: With just a few months left to complete my apprenticeship, I have been offered and accepted a position as Head of Parts for the West Midlands Region. This is a position I’m honoured to be given and it has confirmed to me that over the last 5 years, all the hard work, determination, and persistence through challenging periods was worth it, and has been key in my progression from a Parts Delivery Driver to Head of Parts. My position now is something I could have only dreamed of at the beginning of this Journey.
Advice for apprenticeship ponderers: To anybody who may be in two minds about enrolling in an apprenticeship, my advice to you is to embrace any opportunity which has the potential to increase your knowledge and skill set. Apprenticeships establish a strong foundation of knowledge, skills, and confidence and have the potential to open many doors in your future. I hope my journey shows you what can be achieved if you put your mind to it.
Good Luck!
Current Job Title: Head of Parts

When Declan joined Motus Commercials: December 2019
Apprenticeship: DAF Apprentice Technician, Apprentice Parts, Level 5 Operations or Departmental Manager
Other training: Motus Management Development Programme and multiple DAF Product/Sales courses
Other roles whilst at Motus Commercials: Apprentice Commercial Vehicle Technician, Parts Advisor, Parts OSS, Parts Sales Manager Hull & York

Declan’s future with Motus Commercials: With just over a month left of my Management apprenticeship and my last MDP course due, I was offered and accepted the role of Head of Parts for the Northern Region. Through continuous support, learning, and development from the company, I was honoured to be given this chance and showcase my skills in the department. Hopefully, with my team, we can make the department the best it can be for our customers and fellow colleagues. In the future, I also plan to hopefully continue my learning and development in the company.
"When I joined MOTUS as a trainee I had no experience working on vehicles. My first mentor had one foot out of the door and put little effort into sharing his knowledge.
My 2nd mentor won DAF UK Technician of the year and is very keen on bettering people and sharing knowledge. Having a mentor is key to knowing the product inside and out and has allowed me to work towards my master tech level and having the confidence to approach my working day to receive any jobs given to me. I have also taken on apprentices and handed over knowledge and experiences that I have dealt with to help them with their career.
Having a mentor has also given me a view of allowing an apprentice to be hands on with jobs whilst I oversee them doing it and making sure they complete the job properly and to the best of their ability."
- Reece Harrowing, HGV Technician, South West
"Being an Apprentice at Motus, I have always felt part of a family. You are supported by your peers from day one, and no job seems too much with the help you receive from your team.
Learning while earning is the main reason I chose an apprenticeship as I wasn’t interested in school and always loved working. Motus Apprenticeships are the best way to gain valuable qualifications while earning money along the way.
Working with an experienced driven team has given me skills that will stick for a lifetime. Hard work doesn’t go unnoticed by anyone at Motus and is acknowledged with awards for going above and beyond, this is a driving point for me to gain that recognition to boost myself early on in my career."
- Cal Fowler, Parts Advisor Apprentice, Barnsley
From the moment we are born we are learning, learning how to walk and how to talk, how to interact with others. Throughout the school and college years this continues at a much-increased rate.
When we enter our working life in whichever is our chosen career path, we have a whole new set of skills to learn.
Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to learn while you are earning. The opportunity to be furthering your knowledge and education in your chosen career path by attending college whilst working in your work environment and having the support, knowledge, and experience of workplace mentors, gives you the best platform for honing your skills and being able to earn a living and potentially provide for not only yourself but your family.
I personally served a 4-year apprenticeship at British Aerospace, I attended college weekly to learn the theory behind my job, but the time spent at work and the guidance from some key influential mentors who invested their time and effort in me was what helped me achieve my goals.
I obviously changed vocations when I caught “the truck bug” and a whole new path of learning and development needed to be undertaken. But the foundation of having served the apprenticeship helped me undertake the task of learning with enjoyment.
Over the many years in the vehicle maintenance and repair industry I have mentored many apprentices, some I bump into from time to time and I take pride in seeing that they have become fully qualified technicians, they enjoy the work they do and earn a good living from it which enables them to support their young families.
The best apprentices show keenness, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn and succeed. Mentors look for this and if displayed will invest all the time and effort in the world to help the apprentice progress.
I get great satisfaction from mentoring and offering all the support and guidance I can because throughout my career there have been key figures who have invested their time and effort in me when I knew nothing and without their effort I would not be where I am today.
We are learning every day of our lives, and I am a firm believer in the sayings “that nobody knows everything, and every day is a school day”.
