What is EV?

EV stands for Electric Vehicle, which may be a truck, van, car, or bus. There are many different types of electric vehicle, some which run entirely on battery power, and some that are powered by a combination of electricity and conventional fuel.
Types of Electric Vehicle
Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)
- Runs on battery power alone
- Has an electric motor rather than an engine
- The vehicle is charged by plugging it into a power source
- Better for the environment - zero fuel means zero emissions
- Good on the wallet with thanks to government purchase incentives, reduced road tax and no penalties in some low emission zone
Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)
- An electric motor supplements the conventional engine, for short journeys at low speeds which can help the driving range
- Has an ICE (internal combustion engine), as does a Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle, but also has a larger battery and more powerful motor
- Cannot be charged via an external power supply – it is charged via technology that reclaims energy which would otherwise be lost when braking
- Increasingly common in cities and urban areas
Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (mHEV)
- The ICE (internal combustion engine) is assisted by an electric motor
- Start-stop capabilities are improved, allowing the engine to switch itself off, at low speeds or when stationary, and restart again when needed
- Similar to a HEV but with a smaller battery so it cannot run purely on electricity for any distance
- A separate 48V battery is charged by regenerative braking and there is no need to connect to an external power source to recharge
Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
- The same as a full Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) but with the ability to plug into an external power source to charge
- Option of hybrid mode to conserve battery life or petrol/diesel-only mode for longer journeys
- The ICE (internal combustion engine) reduces the risk of having to stop and recharge
- The large capacity battery allows the vehicle to drive for ranges of up to 30 miles, with zero emissions

- Reduced running costs, when compared to petrol- or diesel-powered vehicles, and no road tax to pay

- Latest technologies and higher level of connectivity
