A Day in the Life of Motus People - Apprentice LCV Technician

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we've asked one of our Apprentice LCV Technicians, Amy Edwards to guide us through a typical day for her at Motus Commercials, as well as giving an insight into an alternative route into the industry

  • Why did you choose an LCV apprenticeship with Motus Commercials?

     

    I have worked for Motus Commercials for nearly three years as a Service Receptionist and then progressed to Sales Admin. Nearly my whole family work for Motus Commercials – my dad, brother, and boyfriend all work within the business as technicians! So, I suppose I have always been involved in the industry, but I never thought about following in the same footsteps as my family until while working as Service Receptionist my interest in understanding how an engine worked grew. I started to spend time in the workshop on a Saturday morning with my boyfriend for a bit of work experience and it was then I knew I wanted to pursue a career as a technician.

    I have always been a bit stuck as I didn’t know what I wanted to do; all my friends went to university, but I knew that wasn’t for me. I decided to take an apprenticeship to get ahead and to benefit myself further in the future. In the end, I am studying for the same amount of time (three years) but at the end, I will have a trade and a job. I am also earning whilst completing my apprenticeship unlike my friends, it’s a win-win!

    I have only been in the apprenticeship a month, but it will be a mix of working in the workshops and then attending the FCA college, in Slough, in one-week blocks. Every two months I will also be visited by an assessor at REMIT who are my training provider. When visiting they will look at my assignments with me, as well as checking assignments I have already completed.

  • A Day with an Apprentice LCV Technician

  • I start work at 8am, cleaning the workshop to ensure it is ready for the day ahead. This is to make sure it is hazard free, especially if there are any spillages.

    I am currently shadowing my mentor Rob Pace, a Diagnostic Technician at the dealership. Whilst being mentored by Rob, I have had the opportunity to be involved in watching him diagnose faults, carrying out elements of a service and helping him to take components on and off the vehicles.

  • Not forgetting breaktime, it is important to refill with tea or coffee throughout the day!

  • During the day, my other duties include filling and topping up engine fluids and picking parts for vehicles. I also help with the logistics for MOT testing by picking up and dropping off customer vehicles.

  • Then, at 4:30pm its time to leave

  • What are the highlights of your apprenticeship so far and what would you say to others considering an apprenticeship?

     

    My favourite part of being an apprentice, although it is cliché to say, is that every day is different. I can be in the workshop all day working with different vehicles and then the next day I am out and about on the road.

    The most important thing I have learnt so far is not to worry! I worried I would be too old as I am not a school leaver, and that I am a girl. But it doesn’t matter, I am treated just the same. Even fully qualified technicians are learning every day. You are never too old to learn!

    I am so glad I took the step to start my apprenticeship, it was definitely the right decision. I would encourage anyone who is interested in becoming an apprentice to try get some work experience if you can as this will really help. Don’t doubt yourself, because if you don’t try, you will never know what you’re capable of. Motus Commercials is a great company to work for, there is a fantastic family feel and there is always someone to help you out, especially for newcomers!
